OSHA Forklift Operator Safety Training

Bermac Instructors have over 45 years combined time operating and instructing forklift safety classes.

Weather you are an experienced operator or a new operator Bermac’s course is applicable to rough terrain forklifs and powered industrial trucks.  Beginners will acquire a wealth of information and experienced operators will reinforce their knowledge of safe operating procedures.  After taking the Bermac forklift operators safety course you will be able to put your new knowledge and your current experience together to become an even better operator.  Our ultimate objective is to make you a safer operator and reduce the risk of accident or injury with the necessary knowledge and skills as required by OSHA.

Bermac Safety will tailor your training class to fit your company needs and your company’s operator experience.  Bermac instructors are well verse in all classes of powered industrial trucks and rough terrain forklifts.  Bermac mainly specializes in Class 1,4,5, and 7 type lifts.  When setting up your companies’ class please let the training coordinator know the following information so we can better serve you.

1: Type of equipment your employees need to be trained on.

2: The expected number of employees to be trained.

3: The experience level of employees to be trained.

4: If any additional information is needed the instructor assigned to training will call employer contact.

The course will consist of classroom training, a written exam, and a practical exam.

During the classroom portion the students will cover:

1: Pre-shift inspection

2: Inspecting the load

3: Loading procedures (ie Picking, Placing Load)

4: General Driving rules

5: Operating around power lines

6: General safety rules.

7: Proper forklift hand signals

8: Workplace specific safety concerns.

During the practical exam portion the students must exhibit safe operating procedures which will include.

  1. Demonstrate pre shift lift inspection
  2. Demonstrate inspection of load before engaging the load
  3. Demonstrate how to safely engage a load
  4. Demonstrate how to safely drive while engaged with a load
  5. Demonstrate how to safely place and disengage from a load
  6. Demonstrate proper shut down procedures

Depending on class size and experience this class can run from 2 to 5 hours.

If your employees have never operated a forklift expect a 4-hour class

If you have 10 or more employees expect at 4-hour plus class

if you are recertifying depending on the number expect 2 to 3-hour class.


Frequently asked questions

Do my forklift operators need to be certified?

OSHA 1910.178(I)(6) states: Certification. The employer shall certify that each operator has been trained and evaluated as required by this paragraph (I).  The certification shall include the name of the operator, date of training, date of evaluation, and the identity of the person(s) performing the training.

How long is the operator’s certification good for?

OSHA 1910.178(I)(4)(iii) states: An evaluation of each powered industrial truck (ie Forklifts) operator’s performance shall be conducted at least once every three years. (Other wise recertified by way or refresher course).

Will you teach my employees to drive a forklift?

No, we will teach them how to safely operate a forklift.
